SRP

SRP is a replacement plug for Santa Barbara Instruments Group standard desiccant plug for ST-7, 8, 9, 10, 1001, 2000 (E, XE, XME) series cameras.

Unlike the standard SBIG desiccant plug, the cap of SRP can be removed without any tools and the desiccant inside replaced with a fresh pack. The type of desiccant used is the same as used by SBIG - Molecular Sieve. SRP holds 3 gram of molecular sieve which is approximately one gram more than SBIG plug (3 gram molecular sieve pack).

SRP replacement plug is CNC machined from solid stock of stainless steel. It is 0.5" longer than SBIG plug and when screwed in the camera - seats flush with the top of the fan housing (the gray plug in the photo to the right is the standard SBIG desiccant plug). The cap is CNC machine solid stock of 6061 aluminum and is black anodized. It has a double O-ring layout to completely seal the desiccant inside from outside air (the double O-ring is visible in the photo below).

The cap is pressed onto the plug and can be removed and replaced without tools. The plug holds 3 grams of Molecular sieve in pack form.

I have them running on both my cameras and they work awesome! I can pull the cameras down to -15c without any frost. Usually if I set the temp to -15c I would get a little frost in the beginning but with these units I get nothing!

Michael

SRP has many advantages over the standard SBIG plug

  • The desiccant can be replaced in the field in matter of seconds.
  • Higher desiccant capacity - last longer
  • No dust is introduced in the camera via the plug since the desiccant is contained in a pack
  • The plug itself can remain in place, since it is stainless steel
  • No need to bake the plug. Extra desiccant packs can be on hand at all times. Save time, money and energy
  • The double O-ring layout completely seals the desiccant from exposure to outside air and moisture
  • Looks cool and Enhances the look of SBIG cameras
  • Cost 20% less than SBIG plug

In itself, this image of M42 is nothing special. It is a short unguided exposure with minimal processing. What is special is that the image was taken at -36 degrees Celsius with the ST-2000 XE and SRP.

Image data:

Location: San Rafael, California
Date: January 2nd, 2004
Temperature: -36.29 C
Humidity: 96%

"The SRP has been chugging right along without incident. To tell the truth, I had forgotten it was in there unless I handle the camera. It appears to be working flawlessly."

John

SRP is supplied with 5 packs of 3 gram molecular sieve packs.
